My Un-popular Opinion — Why Spiritual Writers Must Reclaim Their Power from Traditional Publishing

There is something that needs to be said. And it needs to be said clearly.

I recently worked with an author who poured her heart, her soul, and her lived experiences into her book. And yet, when it came time to promote it… she held back.

When we dug deeper, the truth came out.

She believed that because her book was not published by a traditional publishing house… it was not a real book. And that she was not a real author.

That broke my heart. Because I was there. I saw the long hours. The sleepless nights. The painful conversations. The moments where she had to relive trauma just to get the words onto the page.

I was there pulling the words out of her. Asking the right questions. Guiding her into flow state. Editing every line with her. Reading and re-reading paragraph after paragraph so that she felt like she did the reader justice — so that the person reading her book would walk away better… healed… expanded.

For all of that to mean nothing… just because of a couple of negative people projecting their unfinished projects onto her?

And her own un dealt with insecurities telling her that a traditionally published book is superior… and that she is somehow less than someone else? No.

Firstly — that is absolute BS.

Traditionally published books are published exactly the same way self-published books are.

The same process. The same platforms. But not the same love. Not the same care.

Say what you want — but I am yet to come across a traditional publishing house that cares more about the message than the profit.

That is why they keep a very high percentage — if not the majority — of your royalties.

That is why they push authors to change and reshape their books until it is unrecognizable.

That is why the soul is often stripped from the pages… so that it can resonate with the masses and sell more copies.

To hell with authenticity. To hell with integrity. To hell with the message God delivered through you.

And this is exactly why I strongly believe that spiritual authors and traditional publishing do not mix.

Because what are you really giving up?

You are not just sharing royalties. You are not just “getting help” to publish your book.

You are giving up:

  • Your creative freedom
  • Your voice
  • Your message in its purest form
  • Your publishing rights
  • Your ownership

You are handing something sacred over to a company driven by profit.

So that you can look legit on the outside… but feel like a fraud on the inside.

What a shame.

And let’s talk about a few more things no one tells you about traditional publishing:

You wait. Sometimes years… just to get accepted.

You get rejected. Over and over again — not because your message isn’t powerful, but because it doesn’t “fit the market.”

You lose control over your cover, your title, your positioning.

You have little to no say in how your book is marketed.

You are often expected to do your own marketing anyway — while they still take the majority of your royalties.

And if your book doesn’t perform fast enough? You are quietly deprioritized.

This is not alignment. This is not service. This is not sacred.

Times are changing. More and more spiritual authors are waking up. They are realizing that their power has been siphoned… by systems that were never designed to honour truth — only to monetize it.

And they are choosing differently. They are choosing to publish on their own terms. To own their content.

To keep 100% of their royalties. To hold onto their rights. To express themselves fully — without censorship, without dilution, without permission.

And here is the truth:

If done correctly… you will never be able to tell the difference between a self-published book and a traditionally published book if they were placed side by side.

The difference is not in the quality. The difference is in the energy.

One is filtered. The other is pure.

So if there is only one thing you take from this… let it be this:

You are good enough.

Your book is good enough.

Your message is good enough.

And your intention — to help, to heal, to uplift — is more than enough.

Do not let anyone tell you otherwise.

Not the industry.

Not other authors.

Not your own fear.

You ARE a real author. And your work matters.
