The Difference Between Paying a Few Hundred Dollars vs a Few Thousand Dollars for Publishing

Today I received an enquiry asking a very common question:

What is the difference between paying a few hundred dollars for publishing versus paying a few thousand?

My answer was simple.

You get what you pay for.

Publishing a book involves many moving parts, and when the price is extremely low, something important is usually missing.

Often, those cheaper publishing offers rely heavily on cheap or free labour, sometimes using AI or unqualified freelancers to complete the work. And while that might keep the price low, it often creates serious problems later on.

Some of the issues I see most often with very low-cost publishing services include:

  • Poor editing or no real editing at all
  • Low-quality cover design
  • Incorrect formatting that causes problems on publishing platforms
  • AI-generated edits that remove the author’s voice or introduce errors
  • No real quality control
  • Little to no post-publishing support
  • Books being published incorrectly or in the wrong categories

In my opinion, the most important part of publishing is editing.

Editing directly affects the reader’s experience. A good editor improves clarity, flow, and readability while preserving the author’s voice. That requires a professional eye and real experience.

Professional editors typically charge over $1,000 for a 50,000-word manuscript, and that is on the lower end of the professional editing range.

When editing is rushed, skipped, or handled by inexperienced providers, readers notice immediately. And unfortunately, once a book is published, those mistakes become part of the final product.

Another example is audiobook production.

Professional audiobook producers typically charge around $200 per finished audio hour. A 50,000-word manuscript usually results in roughly six hours of finished audio, which means audiobook production alone can cost around $1,200.

And that’s just one part of the process.

Beyond editing and audio production, there are still many other steps involved in publishing a professional book:

  • Cover design
  • Proofreading
  • Book formatting for eBook and print
  • Manuscript collation and preparation
  • Publishing setup and platform research
  • Distribution setup
  • Marketing and promotion guidance
  • Launch preparation

Each of these areas requires specialized knowledge and professional service providers — editors, designers, formatters, and audiobook producers — and that level of care naturally costs more than a few hundred dollars.

Over the years, I have also learned something important.

If you see publishing offers that seem too cheap to be true, they usually fall into one of three categories:

  1. Extremely low quality
  2. Incomplete services
  3. A scam

That may sound harsh, but unfortunately I have seen many authors lose money this way.

So if you are considering working with a publisher or publishing service, do your research first.

Ask for:

  • Previous work samples
  • Testimonials from authors
  • References
  • Examples of books they have published

Better yet, buy one or two of the books they have produced and see the quality for yourself.

Spending a few dollars on research is far better than risking hundreds or thousands of dollars on a service that does not deliver what it promises.

At the end of the day, publishing your book is not just about getting it online.

It’s about creating a professional, high-quality book that respects your message, your readers, and the work you’ve put into writing it.

And when something matters that much, it deserves to be done properly.
