Publishing Scams to Watch Out For as a Spiritual Author

In the spiritual community, many authors feel called to share their message to uplift, heal, and awaken others. But when stepping into the publishing world—especially for the first time—heart-led, purpose-driven authors often find themselves vulnerable to offers that look supportive on the outside… but are actually predatory in nature.

As someone who holds sacred space for spiritual messengers to publish their stories, I’ve seen too many gifted writers lose money, rights, and energy to scams disguised as publishing “opportunities.”

Let’s change that. Below are some of the most common publishing scams—and how to protect yourself so your light and message can shine safely.

The Rise of Predatory Publishers

Not all publishing companies have your best interest at heart. Vanity presses often charge thousands of dollars just to “publish” your book—with very little support in editing, marketing, or actual book distribution.

Red flags to watch for:

  • Vague or inflated promises (e.g. “We’ll make you a bestseller!”)
  • Zero vetting process (they’ll publish anything—as long as you pay)
  • No transparency on where your book will be sold
  • Pushy sales tactics with limited-time discounts

Your book deserves more than a stamp and a receipt. It deserves reverence.

Flashy “All-In-One” Deals That Promise the World

Some scammy services lure spiritual authors with impressive-looking packages: they’ll claim to help you become a bestseller, get you speaking gigs, or even ghostwrite and publish your book quickly—all for a hefty price tag.

Ask yourself:

  • Who is behind this offer? Are they spiritually aligned?
  • Can they show you past results or testimonials?
  • Is the pricing fair—and are services clearly listed?

If it feels too good to be true, it probably is.

Fake Awards and Paid Review Schemes

Another trap many fall into: fake book awards that require expensive entry fees but have no legitimacy, or review services that guarantee glowing feedback… for a price.

These don’t help your book build trust or visibility. In fact, they can actually damage your credibility.

Instead:

  • Submit to recognized, respected book awards.
  • Ask genuine readers for honest Amazon or Goodreads reviews.
  • Grow your presence organically—even if slowly, it’s authentically.

Rights and Royalties Exploitation

Some contracts will try to take lifetime rights to your work—or charge massive royalty cuts while giving little in return.

Every spiritual author should know this: You do not have to give up your power to be published.

Always:

  • Read the contract carefully.
  • Retain copyright ownership.
  • Ask about royalties, termination clauses, and licensing rights.
  • Get advice from someone who understands publishing contracts.

Social Media “Influencers” & Fake Marketing Promises

Some marketing “experts” claim they can get you thousands of book sales, followers, or views. They’ll charge big money and often use bots, fake engagement, or non-targeted ads.

The result? You’re left out of pocket—with little real impact.

Look for marketers or promoters who:

  • Specialize in conscious/spiritual audiences
  • Offer transparent strategies
  • Focus on relationship-building and long-term visibility

Your book is more than content—it’s an energetic transmission. It deserves aligned promotion.

Energy Integrity Matters in Publishing

Just because a service is spiritual-themed doesn’t mean it’s in integrity. Some use spiritual language to bypass true transparency or manipulate your emotions.

Always check in with your intuition. Take a moment, breathe, and ask:

Does this feel aligned with my values, my message, and my mission?

Trust your synchronicity and that inner knowing. It will never steer you wrong.

If You’ve Been Scammed—You’re Not Alone

If you’ve already signed a bad deal or feel you’ve been scammed, you can:

  • Cancel recurring payments or dispute charges
  • Document all communication
  • Seek advice from ethical publishing consultants
  • Reclaim your voice and republish your work in a sacred, supportive space

Your message is still powerful. Nothing can take that from you.

How to Find Safe, Sacred Publishing Spaces

Look for publishers who:

  • Center your voice, your rights, and your sovereignty
  • Have a mission that aligns with healing, love, and truth
  • Offer clarity and transparency every step of the way
  • Treat your story with sacred reverence

This is exactly why I founded the Near-Death Institute (NDI) and began publishing co-author and solo books by experiencers, mystics, and spiritual messengers. It’s not just publishing—it’s spiritual stewardship and service.

Amplifying voices of truth, love, and healing is part of my own sacred purpose and service to humanity. And I’m honored to walk beside others who are ready to share their soul’s message safely and powerfully.
