How Spiritual Authors Should Write Their “About the Author” Bio - The Small Section of Your Book That Builds Deep Connection

Even though the About the Author is a small section in your book, my advice is always to take your time with it. This section is actually more important than you think.

By the time you reach this stage, you’ve already written your manuscript, got it edited, designed the cover, and prepared everything for publication. And all of a sudden, writing a paragraph about yourself can suddenly feel strangely difficult.

But your About the Author is not just a formality at the back of the book. It’s actually an important part of helping readers understand who you are and why they should trust your message. This section is meant to introduce you on a deeper, more meaningful level, what you write about, and why your perspective matters.

For you, as a spiritual author especially, this section plays a unique role. Your readers are often exploring topics that challenge long-held beliefs about life, death, consciousness, awakening or the soul journey. They want to know the person and the intention behind the message.

So instead of treating your About the Author as an afterthought, here are a few ways to approach it with clarity and intention.

1. Focus on What Makes You the Messenger

Your author bio does not need to tell your entire life story. Instead, it should highlight the experiences that connect you to the message of the book. This might include your near-death experience, your spiritual awakening, your years of studying consciousness or practicing healing, or the personal experiences that shaped your understanding of spirituality and life.

Readers want to know why you wrote this book and what brought you to this path. When those experiences are shared clearly and honestly, it builds trust and connection.

2. Keep It Clear and Concise

An author bio should be short enough that people actually read it and long enough that they can get to know what matters about you.

Many effective bios are around 300–500 words and focus only on the most relevant information.

You don’t need to list every accomplishment or explain every stage of your life.

Instead, include who you are, what you write about, why you write about it, and one or two meaningful details about your work or life

Think of it as a doorway, not a bio. It should invite readers to learn more about you, not overwhelm them with details they don't need or don't care about.

3. Let Your Humanity Show

Credentials matter in some fields. But for spiritual books, authenticity matters even more. Readers want to know that the person writing the book is a real human being who has walked a path of transformation.

Your bio might mention things like your personal spiritual journey, your family life, the work you do helping others, the question that led you to write the book, and the impact you intend to make on humanity.

These small details humanize you and help readers feel connected to the person behind the pages.

4. Write It in the Third Person

Author bios are usually written in third person, even though it may feel strange at first.

For example:

Instead of “I am a spiritual author and publisher…”

I would write “Ameera May is a spiritual author and publisher…”

Writing in third person keeps the bio consistent with how books, websites, and media outlets typically introduce authors. It also makes it easier for your bio to be reused for podcasts, interviews, and speaking engagements.

5. Remember the Real Purpose of the About the Author section.

Your author bio is not meant to impress people. It is meant to create a connection with your readers.

Someone may finish your book, turn the page, and think, “Who wrote this?”

Your bio is the moment they meet you. If it’s honest, clear, and grounded in your journey, it can deepen the reader’s relationship with both you and the message you shared.

Spiritual books are often written because something wanted to come through us and needed to be shared. Your author bio simply tells the reader where that message came from.

Not your entire life story. Just enough to say:

This is who I am.

This is the path that brought me here.

And this is why I felt called to write this book.

Sometimes a few honest sentences are all that’s needed to remind the reader that the message they just received came from a real soul walking the same human journey.
